Alec Hollandina itseään pitänyt olento on luopunut ihmisyyden harhasta ja tullut sinuiksi oman olemuksensa kanssa. Elämä tuntuu ainakin päällisin puolin idylliseltä, olento elää luonnonmukaista elämää ja viihtyy suomaastossa rakkaan ystävänsä Abigailin seurassa. Louisianan rämemailla ei kaikki kuitenkaan ole hyvin, sillä ikivanha pahuus puskee esiin, kostamaan kokemansa loukkaukset... niin olennolle kuin hänen läheisilleenkin... ja koko ihmiskunnalle.

Rämeen olento oli Alan Mooren (Vartijat, Kerrassaan merkillisten herrasmiesten liiga, V niin kuin verikosto) läpimurto amerikkalaisille sarjakuvamarkkinoille, ja sitä pidetään edelleen yhtenä hänen pääteoksistaan. Tässä toisessa kokoelmassa Moore jatkaa olennon kertomusta viemällä hahmon kauhun ytimeen... ja sen tuolle puolen. Kokoelma sisältää Mooren kehutuimpiin luomuksiin kuuluvat tarinat "Alas kuolleiden joukkoon" sekä "Pog". Osa näistä sarjakuvista suomennetaan nyt ensimmäistä kertaa. Mooren sävähdyttävää, kammottavaa ja yllättävää kerrontaa myötäilevät hienosti Stephen Bissetten ja John Totlebenin houreiset piirrokset. Tähän kokoelmaan esipuheen on laatinut palkittu romaani- ja sarjakuvakirjoittaja Neil Gaiman.
