Sydney Schanberg (Sam Waterson) wordt in 1972 als correspondent van de New York Times naar Cambodja gestuurd om daar verslag te doen van de groeiende oorlog tussen de rebellen van de rode khmer en de regering. Samen met zijn vriend Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor), zijn Cambodjaanse assistent, geeft hij een beeld van de waanzin en de tragedie van deze burgeroorlog. Als de Amerikaanse troepen het land verlaten, stuurt Dith Pran zijn familie mee naar Amerika. Zelf blijft hij achter om Schanberg te helpen. Als de rode khmer op 17 april 1975 de hoofdstad Phnom Penk bezet, redt Pran het leven van Schanberg en dat van enkele andere buitenlandse correspondenten. Wanneer alle buitenlanders het land uit worden gestuurd en de Cambodjanen de stad moeten verlaten, is er niets dat Schanberg kan doen om zijn vriend Dith Pran te helpen. Terug in Amerika raakt Schanberg zijn schuldgevoel en de angst over het lot van zijn vriend niet kwijt. Wat is er gebeurd met Dith Pran? Zou hij mogelijk de verschrikkingen van Cambodja hebben overleefd?
