General info : | | Kredietbank, abbreviated KB, was the business name used by Kredietbank NV, an Antwerp based Belgian bank founded in 1935.
In 1998 the Kredietbank NV merged with Cera Bank and ABB Verzekeringen NV into KBC Bankverzekeringsholding NV.
In 2005 KBC Bankverzekeringsholding would merge with Algemene Maatschappij Voor Nijverheidskrediet NV (shortened Almanij NV) into KBC Group NV.
The history of the Kredietbank begins on July 17, 1889, when the “Volksbank Van Leuven” was founded in Leuven. After the First World War, de Volksbank was transformed into a public limited company (NV) and began a period of expansion in Flanders. She founded subsidiary banks everywhere (such as the Bank voor Handel en Nijverheid in Kortrijk and the Algemeene Bankvereeniging in Antwerp) and helped to establish other financial institutions. At the end of the 1920s, when the crisis in Europe began to take shape and numerous (smaller) banks also got into difficulties, a period of mergers began, which ultimately led to the establishment of the Kredietbank voor Handel en Industrie, on February 9, 1935.
Since then, Kredietbank has grown from a modest bank into one of the largest financial institutions in the country. The bank had also been active in Wallonia since 1958 through its subsidiary bank Crédit Général SA de Banque.
Between 1935 and 1990, the number of employees increased from just under 1,000 to approximately 10,000, and the number of bank offices grew from 236 to 763. | |
