General info : Roger d'Exsteyl (born December 22, 1926 in Ledeberg, Belgium - died January 26, 1979 in Ghent, Belgium (aged 52)) was the pen name of Roger Adolf Martens, a Ghent based journalist, publisher and writer of crime novels and stories. The name d'Exsteyl refers to his mother's name. After studying journalism for 3 years in Brussels, complemented by studies in art history, parapsychology and dramatic art, he works as a freelance journalist for several newspapers such as 'Vooruit', 'De Gentenaar', 'Het Laatste Nieuws', 'La Flandre Libérale' from 1948 to 1955. In 1953 d'Exsteyl sets up his own publishing house “ 't Lanteernken” (in the Sint Niklaasstraat in Ghent). With a series under the title “Bakerstreet-Mysterie” he wants to focus on crime stories by Belgian writers. The first (and only) publication in the series is his own novel 'De Dames Verbrugge', thus considered a self-published work. In 1964 'De Dames Verbrugge' is reprinted in the Flemish Pocket series under the title 'Rapsodie in Bloed'. In 1973 a film based on the book was released under the title Kruiswegstraat 6 in French, with Dutch subtitles (Daska Films, 90 minutes) and later in a new version (French and Dutch spoken, French and Dutch subtitles (Alvos Films, 90 minutes). He would never again equal the success of his debut novel. He would later write three more gangster novels (Het avontuur met Beatrijs (1956), Week-end met moord (1956) and De schone en het monster (1956)) and do translator and scriptwriting work before serving as a full time employee for the newspaper De Standaard/De Gentenaar from 1967 to 1973. In 1968 he would write the novel 'De gezellen van de Angst". Towards the end of his life d'Exsteyl became seriously ill. A first major operation took place in 1971. On January 26, 1979: d'Exsteyl died during a fire in his home in Ghent.
