| General info : | | Georges Fall (born on May 28, 1920 in Métlaoui, Tunisia - died on April 1, 2014 in Paris, France (aged 93)) was a French publisher and writer passionate about contemporary art.
In the early 1940s, during his studies in Tunis, Georges Fall met the poets Jean Amrouche and Armand Guibert (also the editor of the Cahiers de Barbarie) and the young art critic and future painter, Edgard Naccache, strong personalities who instilled in him a love of art.
Drawn to the book trade, in the summer of 1946, at the urging of Amrouche, who was serving as literary director, he joined the publishing house of Edmond Charlot. He became the publishing house's representative for several outlying districts of Paris, as well as for the whole of Brittany and Normandy.
From 1949 to 1959, Georges Fall founded and directed Éditions Falaize.
In 1954, Georges Fall launched a new publishing house, Éditions Fall, which published " Le Musée de poche " (The Pocket Museum), a collection of small monographs on contemporary artists that enjoyed considerable success.
In 1958, Georges Fall published one of the first books on the art of Carthage. In 1959, he was appointed by Daniel Cordier as the executive producer of the International Surrealist Exhibition.
After selling "Le Musée de poche" in 1967, Georges Fall, along with Jean-Clarence Lambert, conceived the idea of ??a quarterly contemporary art journal called Opus International, which quickly established itself in the critical landscape. For over twenty-five years, Georges Fall devoted himself almost exclusively to his journal, occasionally publishing monographs, notably in the BibliOpus collection, on various contemporary artists. The journal published its final issue at the end of 1995.
In 1970, Georges Fall published the catalogue for the first Vasarely museum at the Château de Gordes and, for children, a "Coloring with Vasarely" book which went through four successive editions of 3,000 copies each, followed in 1975 by the catalogue in three languages ??for the Vasarely Foundation in Aix-en-Provence. Becoming his agent after the closure in 1976 of the Denise René gallery which had exhibited him since 1944, he published, over a twenty-year collaboration, more than 37,000 serigraphs by the artist.
Georges Fall published a final series of monographs at the end of the 1990s with, among others, Michel Ragon, and opened a new art gallery on rue Vieille-du-Temple, in which he exhibited Jasper Johns and Roberto Mangu. | |
