Gérard Fromanger (born September 6, 1939 in Pontchartrainis, France - died June 18, 2021 in Paris, France (aged 81)) was a French painter.

After finishing secondary school, Gérard Fromanger attended the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris for 18 days, then followed the evening classes of the City of Paris in the class of Robert Lesbounit, at the academy of the Grande Chaumière.

The sculptor César noticed him, lent him his studio and followed his work for two years. He became friends with the poet Jacques Prévert and the brothers Alberto and Diego Giacometti.

From a very young age, in the 1960s, Gérard Fromanger established himself as one of the leading figures on the artistic scene in Paris by participating in the adventure of narrative figuration and the invention of the New History.

He is one of the founders of the Popular Fine Arts Workshop in May 1968, which produced hundreds ofthe May 68 wall posters and slogans accompanying the struggle of students and workers. In that same year, he shot tract films with Jean-Luc Godard.

In the early 1970s, he travelled to China thanks to the Dutch filmmaker Joris Ivens. At the end of that decade, he produced a series of paintings during a stay in Aimargues.

In 2020, the directors of the Théâtre des Bouffes-du-Nord entrusted him with the ornamentation of the ceiling of the theatre's foyer.

After having lived and worked in Normandy and the Camargue, in China and Belgium, in Paris, London, Berlin, Tokyo, Abidjan and New York, at the end of his life he lived and worked in Paris and Siena.

He died on June 18, 2021 in Paris, 13th arrondissement, at the age of 81 and is buried in Père-Lachaise Cemetery.
