Stéphane Aquin (born in 1959 in Montreal, Canada) is a museum director.
He was named Director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) in November 2020.
Stéphane Aquin is a Montreal native who has lived in the United States and Switzerland.
In the 1990s, after an initial stint at the Museum during which he collaborated on the opening of the Jean-Noël Desmarais Pavilion, he distinguished himself as an art critic in Quebec and across Canada. He rejoined the MMFA in 1998 as Curator of Contemporary Art, a position he held for sixteen years. During this time, he organized more than 40 exhibitions and made a significant contribution to the institution's reputation for excellence.

In 2015, he left Montreal for Washington to assume the position of chief curator at the Smithsonian Institution's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Until 2020, he curated numerous exhibitions, edited various reference works, and participated in several international conferences and juries on behalf of the Hirshhorn.

As Director General of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA), he continues to develop this major Montreal institution by prioritizing an inclusive approach to art, the artist's vision, education, and innovation.

He is the son of the seminal writer Hubert Aquin, famous in equal part for penning the 1965 classic Prochain épisode and for committing suicide on the grounds of Villa Maria College.

Entering the Université de Montréal at 22, he earned a master's degree in art history in 1988 from the University of Montreal.
