General info :
Stéphan Colman, pen name of Stéphane Colman (born on April 20, 1961 in Liège, Belgium) is a Belgian comic book artist and writer. Stéphan Colman owes his vocation as a cartoonist to the painter Robert Crommelynck, who was his paternal grandmother's second husband, and especially to his grandmother herself, who drew, painted, and sculpted. Stéphan Colman showed some of his work to Jijé in 1976 before taking courses at the Liège Academy of Fine Arts. In 1980, he drew three stories of Marsouin Pedzouille in Aïe! and made his professional debut in 1982, when he created a twenty-page story for Spirou magazine with writer Stephen Desberg, featuring a little boy who becomes a kitten. In 1989, Billy the Cat reappeared, again in Spirou magazine, with a 44-page story entitled " Dans la peau d'un chat" (In the Skin of a Cat ). An animated series adaptation was released in 1999. However, Colman left the series in 2000 due to creative differences with co-creator and writer Stephen Desberg. He was succeeded by the artist Peral. Since 2006, he has been writing the scripts for the Marsupilami series, illustrated by Batem and created by André Franquin. After writing 16 volumes of the series, he penned his final script for it with Marsu Club in 2025. His collaboration with the artist continued on the humor series Sam Speed, co-created by the two colleagues in 2003 with Éric Maltaite (the son of Will, illustrator of Tif et Tondu). In 2012, he took over the script for a new series, this time for adults, O'boys, published by Dargaud. After the first two volumes written by Philippe Thirault, published in 2009, Colman completed the first cycle with a third volume, titled Midnight Crossroad, published in 2012. Two years later, he reunited with Maltaite to launch a trilogy, Choc. This spin-off series is a prequel to Tif and Tondu, as it recounts the origins of the duo's archenemy. The tone is more dramatic than in the original series. A second volume was released inApril 2016, while a third one concludes the trilogy in early 2019. In addition, he participated in the collective albums: Baston no 5: La Ballade des baffes (Goupil, 1983), Rocky Luke - Banlieue West (SEDLI, 1985), 20 Couvertures pour Spirou et Fantasio (éditions du Lion, 1987), Les Enquêtes de leurs amis ( Soleil , 1989), Images du scoutisme - 50 ans de calendrier FSC ( FSC , 1991), L'Arbre des deux printemps ( Le Lombard , 2000) and Spirou défend des droits de l'homme en 2019.
