Luigi Lo Cascio (born 20 October 1967, Palermo, Italy) is an Italian actor nd director of theatre and cinema. He won the David di Donatello as best actor for his starring role in I cento passi. In 2012, he debuted as film director and writer with La città ideale. After graduating from the Garibaldi classical high school in Palermo, he enrolled in the faculty of medicine and surgery, but after two years he abandoned it to devote himself to acting. His theatre debut was in a small part in the adaptation of Waiting for Godot by Federico Tiezzi. In 1992 he graduated from the Silvio D'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Art with an essay on Hamlet, directed by Maestro Orazio Costa. After acting in two classic works: Margherita Gautier and Romeo and Juliet , directed by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi , he began a career, first in theatre and then in cinema. In 2000 he won the David di Donatello for best leading actor for I cento passi, the film which represented his cinematic debut, directed by Marco Tullio Giordana who would later direct him in the award-winning The Best of Youth ( 2003 ), which would earn him the 2004 Nastri d'argento, ex aequo with all the male protagonists of the film. In 2001 he won the Volpi Cup for best actor at the Venice Film Festival for Luce dei miei occhi by Giuseppe Piccioni. In 2005 he directed and starred in Nella tana , a monologue based on Franz Kafka 's last story, The Burrow, which he also rewrote and adapted. In 2012 he published the theatrical texts La caccia/Nella tana for Neos Edizioni, edited by Roberto Rossi Precerutti. He made his directorial debut in 2012 with La città ideale, a film presented at the 69th Venice International Film Festival. In 2015 he directed and interpreted William Shakespeare 's Othello in the theatre with Vincenzo Pirrotta, Giovanni Calcagno and Valentina Cenni in the role of Desdemona. In the same year he acted in Il nome del figlio, directed by Francesca Archibugi , obtaining a nomination for the David di Donatello. In 2018 his narrative debut: Ogni ricordo un fiore was published by Feltrinelli. In 2020 he won both the David di Donatello for Best Supporting Actor and the Nastro d'argento for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Marco Bellocchio's film The Traitor. In 2022 he played the writer and myrmecologist Aldo Braibanti in Gianni Amelio's film Lord of the Ants, a candidate in competition at the 79th Venice International Film Festival. From 2022 to 2024 he played the leading role in the television series The Bad Guy, a role that earned him a nomination for the Nastri d'argento - Grandi Serie. Luigi Lo Cascio is married to Desideria Rayner, a film editor, with who he has two children.
