Joseph Farris (born May 30, 1924 in Newark, NJ, USA - died January 28th 2015 in Bethel, CT, USA (aged 90)) was an American cartoonist.
In addition to being an accomplished New Yorker cartoonist for five decades, he published cartoons in virtually all of the major magazines that used cartoons, when major magazines still used cartoons such as Saturday Review, New Woman and the Humorama publications in the 1960s.
His first cartoon was published in The New Yorker in 1957 and he became a contract cartoonist in 1971.
His many books include Phobias and Therapies (1977), A Cog in the Wheel, and They're a Very Successful Family (1989).
He also illustrated a number of books, such as The Latin Riddle Book and Loose Leaf. His work has been widely anthologized and is part of the permanent collections of the Bruce Museum, the US Army Women’s Museum, and the Morgan Library and Museum.
In 2012, National Geographic published Joe’s “A Soldier’s Sketchbook,” a memoir of his time in the war.
He studied at the Whitney School of Art from 1947 to 1950.
He resided in Bethel, Connecticut, United States and died in his home that he had lived in since 1954.
Joe was survived by his wife Cynthia and his daughter Christine (Farris) Andersen.
