Michael Laurence (born ca. 1941) is an editor, publisher and philatelist.
A cum laude graduate of Harvard, he began his journalistic career as a sports writer for major Boston and Memphis newspapers.
He served as an Associate Editor at Playboy magazine US since 1963 and rose to various editorships and ultimately a vice-presidency.
In 1982 he converted his hobby into his profession and became editor of Linn's Stamp News, shortly thereafter becoming its publisher and also a vice-president of Amos Press.
He would serve at Linn’s Stamp News in Sidney, Ohio for the next 23 years.
At Linn's Stamp News Michael Laurence was instrumental in the company’s 1984 purchase of Scott Publishing Co., which brought the Scott catalog, its line of stamp albums and Scott Stamp Monthly to Sidney, and he launched the annual Linn’s U.S. Stamp Yearbook series.
After Linn he became editor-in-chief of the Chronicle of U.S. Classic Postal Issues, the quarterly journal of the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society.
In the 2000s he served as editorial director of Amos Hobby Publications.
Laurence also contributed research articles to the Chronicle and other philatelic publications, and edited the Collectors Club of Chicago’s publication of United States Mail and Post Office Assistant.
In 2006 he was named head the Philatelic Foundation.
He is the author of books such as Playboy's Investment Guide (1971, Playboy Press), Ten-Cent 1869 Covers: A Postal Historical Survey (2010, The Collectors Club of Chicago). He also developed the graphics-oriented booklet on basics called Linn's Stamp Collecting Made Easy, with over 350,000 copies already sold.
In 2019 he received the Charles J. Peterson Philatelic Literature Life Achievement award from the American Philatelic Research Library.
He is an alumnus from Harvard University.
