"Filmstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen", abbreviated to "Filmstiftung NRW", is the previous business name of "Film- und Medienstiftung NRW GmbH", a production house founded in 1991. The name was used until 2011. With an average annual funding volume of over 30 million euros, it is one of the most important production houses in Germany and Europe.
The Filmstiftung is based in Düsseldorf and commissioned by the cultural and economic promotion of the film and media industry in North Rhine-Westphalia . In addition to Land and WDR, the shareholders in NRW also include ZDF and RTL.

In 1991, Prime Minister Johannes Rau and WDR director Friedrich Nowottny, as founding shareholders, created a regional film promotion company in the form of a limited liability company GmbH. The declared goal was to make of the region North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) an important film area in Europe.
In 2003, the promotional activities of the "Filmbüros Nordrhein-Westfalen" were integrated into the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW.

On 19 June 2011, the organization announced the name change from "Filmstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen" to "Film- und Medienstiftung NRW". The stated reason for this was that the company "in the future, in addition to classic film promotion, will also be dedicated to area marketing and the promotion of innovative media content" . In this logic the "Film- und Medienstiftung NRW" also took over the tasks of the "Mediencluster NRW GmbH", which was previously responsible for Neue Medien (new media).
