Nuoruudenromaaninsa ja aurinko nousee myötä Ernest Hemingwaysta (1899-1961) tuli sukupolvensa palvottu tulkki, joka vaikutti voimakkaasti paitsi 1920- ja 30-luvun aikalaiskokemukseen, myös maailmansotien jälkeiseen kulttuuriin, ja nousi amerikkalaisen kirjallisuuden keskeiseksi hahmoksi. 1954 hän sai Nobelin kirjallisuuspalkinnon.

Ernest Hemingwayn on sanottu tehneen amerikkalaisesta kadunmiehestä kirjallisen kulttuuri-ihanteen. Ja aurinko nousee vie lukijan 1920-luvun Pariisiin ja Madridiin, keskelle levottomien nuorten aikuisten maailmaa, alkoholia, kolmiodraamaa, härkätaistelua ja verta. Hänen juurettomat ja levottomat sielunsa etsivät itseään ja merkityksiä elämäänsä samaan aikaan kiihkeällä ja kaiken nähneellä tavalla.

Pariisin vilkkaus ja Espanjan polttava aurinko painuvat romaanissa niin henkilöiden kuin lukijan ihon alle. Romaani tasapainottelee taitavasti kohtalonomaisuuden ja sattumanvaraisuuden välillä.
