Naapurikylän miehet hyökkäävät K'osin kimppuun. Seuraavana päivänä hän löytää poikavauvan paikasta missä raaka teko tapahtui. Uskoen lapsen olevan lahja, joka toisi takaisin hänen onnensa, K'os ottaa kuolemaan jätetyn kampurajalkaisen pojan omakseen ja antaa hänelle nimen Chakliux.

Kaksikymmentä vuotta myöhemmin K'os on yhä kostonhimoinen mutta myös ovela riidankylväjä, joka häikäilemättä käyttää kauneuttaan valtansa välineenä. Tällä välin arvostetuksi tarinankertojaksi varttunut Chakliux on lähetetty takaisin synnyinkyläänsä. Siellä hänen on määrä naida shamaanin tytär ja rakentaa rauha kylien välille. Nuorukaista aletaan kuitenkin epäillä huonon onnen tuojaksi, ja kun kylässä tapahtuu kaksoismurha hänen on lähdettävä kauas vieraiden ihmisten pariin.

Niin alkaa matka joka koskettaa monien heimo- jen ja yksittäisten ihmisten elämää. Chakliuxilla on opettajinaan meri ja taivas, maa ja eläimet ja apunaan ikiaikaisten laulujen voima.
