Syyskuussa 1953 Pentti Saarikoski täytti 16 vuotta. Siitä alkavat hänen säilyneet päiväkirjansa. Merkinnät päättyvät neljä vuotta myöhemmin, kun nuori runoilija oli tehnyt sopimuksen esikoisteoksestaan ja oli naimisiin menossa.

Päiväkirjojen avoimuus ja päämäärätietoisuus ovat hämmästyttävät. Ne ulottuvat ryöppyävästä itsekritiikistä ja seksuaalifantasioista vakaviin jumalpohdintoihin ja maailmankatsomuksen etsintään. Nuori Saarikoski kuvaa kasvuaan varhaiseen miehuuteen, suhdettaan Jumalaan, tovereihinsa, naisiin, taiteeseen ja ennen kaikkea kirjoittamiseen.

Teoksen toimittaja Pekka Tarkka on taiten valinnut merkintöjen kertovan ytimen. Nuoruuden päiväkirjoja lukee kuin romaania; niissä puhuu elämä, jonka "kaaoksesta on pusertunut runon kosmos".
