Itävaltalaisesta Robert Musilista on sanottu, että hän on vuosisatamme etevimpiä ja samalla vähiten tunnettuja saksankielisiä kertojia. Hänet "löydettiin" vasta 50-luvulla, jolloin hänet nostettiin Proustin ja Joycen vertaiseksi eurooppalaisen romaanitaiteen uudistajana.

Vuonna 1924 ilmestynyt kokoelma Kolme naista sisältää kolme novellia, jotka keskittyvät tutkimaan miehen ja naisen suhdetta, rakkauden ja mustasukkaisuuden eri ilmenemismuotoja. Grigia kertoo vuoristoseudun talonpoikaisnaisen ja muualta tulleen, sivistyneen miehen tilapäisestä suhteesta, jonka naisen aviomies väkivalloin lopettaa. Portugalin nainen on historiallista taustaa vasten peilaava moni-ilmeinen, symbolistinen kuvaus sotimaan lähteneestä linnanherrasta ja hänen portugalilaisesta vaimostaan. Laajan Tonka-novellin teemana on epäsuhtainen rakkaussuhde, jota myrkyttää keskinäisen luottamuksen puute. Tässä novellissa Musilin psykologisesti erittelevä, moderni kertojan ote tuntuu erityisen raikkaana.
