The book was his debut novel, and gained significant success, becoming the 10th-best selling novel in the United States in 1995, selling over 15 million copies. This also makes it one of the best-selling books of all time.[1] In 2003 the novel appeared at number 195 on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novels".[2]
