General info : Launched in 1972, “Folio” is the paperback imprint of French literary giant Éditions Gallimard SA. Folio is described as a catalog that draws on the best of the world's literary heritage and showcases contemporary literature. A catalog comprised of carefully selected works that bring foundational authors (Albert Camus, Romain Gary, André Gide, Jean Giono, Joseph Kessel, and others) into dialogue with emerging talents. While titles from the Gallimard catalog dominate (Gallimard, Denoël, Mercure, Table Ronde, etc.), a quarter of the new releases come from other publishers (Albin Michel, Buchet-Chastel, Grasset, Stock, Sabine Wespieser, Finitude, Liana Lévi, etc.). Thus, Folio provides access to a more nuanced and expansive world. It is the most famous series of livres de poche (pocket books) in France, whose meteoric rise (15 million copies were sold in the first six years of activity alone) owes a great deal to its iconic cover template, designed by Gallimard’s then art director, Robert Massin (1925–2020). Contemporary literature in the Folio series has been curated by Marjolaine Dufour since 2019. As of 2026 the series counts more than 10.000 titles.
