General info : René Lezard was a German fashion label used initially by René Lezard Mode GmbH, a company founded in 1978 by Thomas Schaefer. It made clothes for men and women. Neither high fashion nor cheap mass-market, René Lezard made quality outfits and separates for High Street shops throughout Germany in what's known as the "gold" range - a bit less than designer but above bridge collections. The clothes had a very practical, Northern European look and feel: thick, warm, heavy-duty office, leisure, and outdoor wear, distinctively German or middle European. The accent was on tailoring, not cut; fabrics were expensive but not flashy. The look was smart-somber. René Lezard also had a French division, named René Lezard Fashion Group SARL and René Lezard Mode SARL. The latter was founded in 1989 in Paris and was dissolved in 1998. There was also a US division, named René Lezard Fashion Group, Inc. established in 1991. The women's apparel was sold in many Saks and Bergdorf Goodman locations. New York's SoHo district was treated to the company's first American store in September 1997. In 2017, the company René Lezard Mode GmbH filed for bankruptcy for the first time. The business operations of René Lezard Mode GmbH were transferred to a new stock corporation, René Lezard Mode AG. 70% of the newly issued shares were transferred to the bondholders of René Lezard Mode GmbH, 30% to various private investors, who at the same time acquired René Lezard's premises in Schwarzach. At the beginning of November 2019, it was announced that the company René Lezard Mode AG would finally cease operations in January 2020 after renewed insolvency. No new investor could be found for several months. All remaining employees were made redundant, and the branches were closed by the end of January 2020 after a sale.
