General info : Saint -Raphaël (stylized as St Raphaël) is the brand name of a French aperitif made from a mixture of mistelle and aromatic plants. Two varieties exist, Saint-Raphaël Rouge and Saint-Raphaël Ambré-Doré. The Saint-Raphaël Quinquina was invented by a Lyon industrialist Pierre-Marie Juppet (1855-1915), who had founded a company "P. Juppet et Cie" in 1884, specializing in alcoholic beverages. He marketed his cinchona for the first time in 1890, which immediately enjoyed great success. In 1896, half of the cinchona wines consumed in Paris were Saint-Raphaël and a few years later, 6,000 liters were consumed every day in the capital according to various testimonies. Building on this success, Juppet founded a limited company “Saint-Raphaël Quinquina” in 1897 in Paris. On export, to the colonies or America , the brand took the qualifier Apéritif de France. Now fallen into disuse in France, it is very present and appreciated in Quebec. Owned by the Bacardi - Martini brand, it was bought by the company Boisset, itself taken over by the La Martiniquaise group in 2009.
