General info :
Kutchinsky was the brand name of a London based jewelry business.

The Kutchinsky brand was founded in 1893 on the arrival in England of Hirsch Kutchinsky from Poland. Kutchinsky and his family had vast experience in the jewelry trade, having been royal jewelers to the court of Ludwig of Bavaria. They established their jewelry business in the East End of London.

In 1930, the founder’s son Morris collaborated with his sons Joseph and Solomon. Joseph was 16 years old at the time and he emerged as a highly talented and enthusiastic jewelry creator. Joseph was a born salesman and under his capable management, the business continued to thrive. Kutchinsky jewelry is renowned, since the 1930s, for its quality and magnificence.

Known simply as ‘Jo’, Joseph Kutchinsky was a natural salesperson and worked to instil the core values of the business – quality products and excellent service – into everything the brand produced. By 1958, the shop on Commercial Road had become a mecca for lovers of fine jewellery and, with this success, they made a move to London’s Knightsbridge. Kutchinsky jewellery had gained a reputation for being extravagant, theatrical and exuberant – a celebration of the end of the war and the availability of luxury goods.

The Kutchinsky house was one of the first in London to produce jewelry creations with platinum; it went on to initiate jewelry designs having a combination of semi-precious stones and diamonds. The outstanding appearance of these modern jewelry creations contributed to the brand’s success.

The jewelry, replicas of animal characters, has enabled the Kutchinsky house to compete with other prominent jewelry brands. The most renowned pieces are 18K yellow gold brooches and pins, adorned with diamonds and semi-precious stones, taking the shape of a bird, tiger or cat.
Eventually, Joseph’s two sons, Roger and Paul, entered the business which was continuously gaining popularity amongst customers both at home and overseas, specifically within the Middle East.
In the late 1980s Paul Kutchinsky, embarked on an almost impossible journey to have the world’s largest jewelled egg made in Britain. One that he made sure to rival Fabergé’s.
Completely fixated upon his newfound purpose, Paul became obsessed with the masterpiece that would go on to become known as the Argyle Library Egg. The 60cm-tall precious creation would end up requiring more than 15kg of 18ct gold, 24,000 pink diamonds from the Argyle mine in Australia, and 7,000 hours of painstaking labour by talented goldsmiths. On completion in 1990, the egg was valued at £7 million.
However, it came at a ruinous price, costing him – according to his daughter Serena Kutchinsky – “his business, his family and his life”.
Facing financial issues after the creation of the Argyle Library egg, the family sold the house to Moussaieff Jewellers Ltd. in 1991 and the Kutchinsky name later fell into ambiguity.
A shop with the Kutchinsky name located 73 Brompton Road, London, remained in business for several years after but closed doors eventually.
