Steven Silverstein (born in Los Angeles, USA) is a photographer.
He began creating abstract photographic art in-camera in 2013 after a fashion photography career spanning four decades.


Born in Los Angeles, SILVERSTEIN moved to Paris as an aspiring editorial photographer where Sarah Moon and her husband, art publisher and former director of Galerie National du Jeu de Paume, Robert Delpire, saw his conceptual work and introduced him to Peter Knapp, the pioneering art director at French Elle. SILVERSTEIN photographed for French Elle for several decades as well as other major fashion magazines, advertisers, and designers. He was based primarily in Paris and on assignment in over twenty-five countries.

Known for his conceptual work, lighting, and a graphic simplicity that allow for an instant read, his images often draw the viewer in for a closer look. In addition to shooting portraits of Catherine Deneuve, Carol Bouquet, Charlotte Rampling, Isabelle Adjani, Charlize Theron, Eva Mendes, Thierry Mugler, Christian Lacroix, and many other celebrities, he has photographed most of the top models of the era for Elle, Vogue, Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar and other American, French and international publications, creating nearly 100 covers and at least a thousand editorial fashion pages. Working with the best hair and makeup teams, SILVERSTEIN also shot campaigns for some of the most prominent brands in the world including Yves St. Laurent, Ungaro, Carolina Herrera, L’Oreal, and Revlon, among dozens of others.

His fashion photography has been exhibited internationally, including with Thierry Mugler: Creatures of Haute Couture exhibition in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Paris Musee des Arts Decoratifs (exhibition catalog) (2019-2020); Snap Cardigan photo exhibition at Agnès B. Galerie in New York and La Galerie du Jour in Paris (2014); and Moda in Italia 150 Anni Di Eleganza at the La Venaria Reale in Torino, Italy (2012), among others.

SILVERSTEIN’S work has also been published in numerous publications including Thierry Mugler: Couturissime exhibition catalogue (2019); Agnès B: The Snap Cardigan (2019); ELLE était une fois de 1945 à nos jours (2015); Elle Mode: 600 covers de 1945 à nos jours (2011), Style Elle: Nos Années 80 (2003), Style Elle: Nos Années 70 (2002) and People: Favorite Pictures Special Collector’s Edition (2000).

In addition, he is the recipient of numerous awards for his editorial and advertising work and has been featured in NPA Pro Spotlight video (2011), Nikon World Magazine (2008) and PhotoArt (1986), as well as garnering press in other art, design and mainstream media outlets.
