Charles H. Townsend (born 1943 or 1944) was the president and chief executive officer of Condé Nast Publications from 2004 till 2015, when he become chairman of the publishing company till 2016.
He has been the Chairman of the Board at Advance Magazine Publishers Inc. since January 2016. He served as a Director of The Advertising Council, Inc.
Prior to Condé Nast Mr. Townsend was chief operating officer of Advance Magazine Group, the parent company of Condé Nast, Fairchild Fashion Group, and Parade Magazine, among others.
He has been with the group since 1994, when he joined as the publisher of women’s lifestyle magazine Glamour.
Mr. Townsend was named Executive Vice President of Conde Nast in 1995 and its Chief Operating Officer in 2000.
From 1986 to 1994, Mr. Townsend was with The New York Times Company, where he was President and C.E.O. of the Women's Magazine Publishing Division.
Mr. Townsend began his publishing career in Miami where he owned and operated an independent publisher's representative company.
In 1975, he sold his firm to the Hearst Corporation and joined the company as Publisher of Motor Boating & Sailing magazine. He served as Publisher of Sports Afield, then Vice President and Group Publisher with responsibilities for a number of Hearst titles.
He concluded his career at Hearst as Executive Vice President and General Manager of Hearst Books and Business Publishing.
Mr. Townsend is a graduate of the University of Michigan.
He married for the third time in 2008 with Jill Roosa, the executive director of the Vernon D. and Florence E. Roosa Family Foundation of Hartford.
He is also the commodore of the New York Yacht Club.
In September 2015, Townsend stepped down as chief executive — announcing Bob Sauerberg as his successor — to become chairman of the publishing company.
In November 2016 Charles Townsend Retired from Condé Nast as Chairman.
