General info :
Studiocanal GmbH, headquartered in Berlin, is the German division of the French media group Studiocanal SA. The Berlin-based subsidiary is one of Germany's largest film distributors and a major provider of DVDs and Blu-rays. The Studiocanal Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of the French Groupe Canal+, also co-produces feature films and is active in the licensing of film and television rights. Studiocanal GmbH, founded on 1 September 2011, is the successor to the former Kinowelt GmbH, based in Leipzig , which was acquired by Vivendi, the parent company of Canal+, in 2008. Kinowelt GmbH, in turn, had emerged from Kinowelt AG, based in Munich, which was founded in 1984 and dissolved in 2001. In 2021, the Kinowelt Group, managed by the holding company Kinowelt GmbH, generated revenue of €55.7 million with 79 employees. Its rental business accounted for 5.5 percent of the market share, while Kinowelt achieved a 4.3 percent share in the home entertainment sector. 22 theatrical releases and 263 DVDs were released that year. The Kinowelt Group companies collectively have access to approximately 10,000 films. Since September 1, 2011, Kinowelt GmbH has operated as the German branch of the Studiocanal Group under the name Studiocanal GmbH, headquartered in Berlin. The 2008 purchase agreement contained a three-year non-retention clause that prevented the relocation from Leipzig for that period.
