General info :
Carl Loben is an editor, DJ/producer & label owner, writer, lecturer residing in London.
In 2011 he was named DJ Mag global editor.
He manages Liverpool electro-blues act Killaflaw, and runs the Westway label with Barry Ashworth (Dub Pistols).
He is the co-author of Renegade Snares, a book written by DJ Mag editors Carl Loben and Ben Murphy.
After university in Leicester he met the late great Steven Wells from the NME at a gig. Swells suggested to send him some reviews and he spent time critiquing them for Carl, and soon afterwards Melody Maker took Carl on as a new freelancer, after which he moved back to London.

Melody Maker in the ‘90s was a publication with huge cultural importance in the mid-90s together with its rival NME (actually owned by the same company, IPC Media, and situated one floor below).
In August 1996 the covers of both NME and MM were accidentally identical – long-range shots of Oasis at their massive Knebworth gig. After that management dictated that there had to be clear blue water between the two titles from that point on, and that The Maker - which sold slightly less than NME at the time - was to covet a younger readership.
As a consequence, Allan Jones would soon leave to found Uncut, the monthly film and music mag, taking Paul Lester and Michael Bonner with him.
The IPC top drafted in the news editor from NME to take charge - Mark Sutherland.
After many feature writers had left under Sutherland for one reason or another he finally left in disgust too. The Maker would fold in 2000.
Carl started doing some freelancing for DJ Magazine and soon fell onto the staff there and would eventually become editor in chief in 2011.
