General info :
Miranda Rae Barnes (born ca. 1995 in Brooklyn, New York, US) is a Caribbean American photographer/director.
Barnes grew up in Brooklyn but went to high school on Long Island.
She received her Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City.
Barnes came to John Jay as a transfer student from Queensborough College, where she won a photo contest and first purchased Robert Frank’s seminal book The Americans. It was this book that launched her interest in photographing the aspects of contemporary American life that often go unseen. At John Jay, she further developed this vision by working on “Doubles” while taking several classes in the humanities and arts.

Her practice is informed by her interests in social justice and the underrepresented. Her arresting visual style is both empathetic and optimistic, amplifying the experiences of the people she encounters.

In 2018 The New York Times sent her to do an exposé on pregnancy discrimination at a Verizon warehouse in Memphis – the attention eventually resulted in the warehouse being shut down. Elsewhere, she stepped into more portraiture for editorial, wrote for Playboy, was named as one of Photo District News’ 30for30.
Other clients include The Atlantic, The New Yorker, The Smithsonian, Vogue Italia, Vogue US, Vanity Fair, Calvin Klein, and Nike.

She lives and works between New York and Austin, Texas.
