ARTE (Association relative à la télévision européenne) is a public Franco-German TV network, a European channel name. It promotes programming in the areas of culture and the arts.
It is made up of three separate companies: the Strasbourg-based European Economic Interest Grouping ARTE GEIE Comité D'Entreprise (founded 1996), plus two member companies acting as editorial and programme production centres, ARTE France SA (founded 1986) in Paris (France) and ARTE Deutschland TV GmbH (founded 2001) in Baden-Baden (Germany).
ARTE France was formerly known as La Sept. ARTE Deutschland TV GmbH is a subsidiary of the two main public German TV networks ARD and ZDF.

ARTE offers a wide choice of high-quality programmes to 60% Europeans in their own language. ARTE programmes are broadcast in French and German 24 hours a day in HD quality on all screens. For 600 hours a year magazines, documentaries and shows are subtitled in English, Spanish and Polish.
Since its creation in 1991, ARTE stands for cultural diversity and multilingualism. ARTE uncovers new talent, encourages artistic creativity, and preserves and promotes Europe’s cultural heritage. ARTE supports talented film-makers as a co-producer and shows ambitious new creations, daring drama and series. On offer are also bold documentaries, no infotainment but daily news of vital interest to Europeans. Not to forget the live music and performances and avant-garde magazines.
