General info :
André Durst (born 1907 - died 1949) was a French impressionist & modern photographer. He was born to a prominent French family.
His clients included magazines such as Vogue Paris, Harper’s Bazaar and American Vogue and fashion houses like Hermès, Balanciaga, Lucien Lelong, Weil, Chanel, Schiaparelli, a.o.

André Durst was known to throw decadent parties. One was fairy tale themed, where Coco Chanel came “dressed as a wood sprite.” His friends were the stylish avant-garde of the interwar years; Rene Crevel (port), Jean Cocteau (filmmaker), Christian Bernard (theatre designer).

He was definitely a surrealist; his editorial images are distinct, and while he was prolly influenced by Hoyningen-Huene, Horst, and Beaton, Durst’s stylistic affect is decidedly his own. “The most notable photographs by Durst were those that employed the use of extreme props and surrealistic elements. He seemed bored by the almost perfunctory nature of photographing sportswear.” He employed an entire staff to style his shoots, had “an interior designer create props for him,” his backdrops were built from scratch, some say for each individual shoot.

Durst was also the creator of comic book series for children, work that was published simultaneously with his photographic work.
