General info :
Established almost 200 years ago, and part of St Ives Group for over 25 years, Clays produces 140 million books each year - everything from the Holy Bible to bestselling authors like Stieg Larsson and J.K. Rowling.

Starting life as a family owned business in London, Clays moved to Bungay, Suffolk, with the acquisition of the print business of Charles Child in 1876. Clays commenced printing mass market paperback books in the 1930’s and thereafter was at the forefront of technological innovation for the trade publishing market. In 1986 Clays was acquired by St Ives plc, then the leading print company in the UK, and went on to establish its position as the leading book printer for the trade market in the UK.

In 2009 Clays opened an automated high-bay warehouse on its Bungay site in Suffolk, a major investment supporting a service driven logistics operation for book distribution. Clays has actively embraced new digital print technologies and continued manufacturing investment has delivered a significant growth in product range, enabling a strong presence in the non-trade and academic markets.

Clays Ltd. provides book printing services to publishing clients in the United Kingdom. The company specializes in monochrome paperbacks and hardbacks. Its services include book production, consultancy, supply chain, pre-retail, and e-solutions. The company also provides value added services, including fulfilment, distribution, print-on-demand, and e-book conversion; and Self-Publishing, a full-service print solution from administrative tasks to design advice, production, and distribution. It serves publishing companies, independent publishers, and small start-up businesses; publisher warehouses, retail distribution centers, and direct to book retailers; and trade, academic, professional and education, micro-publishing, and self-publishing markets. Clays Ltd. was formerly known as Richard Clay Ltd. and changed its name to Clays Ltd. in December 1989. The company was founded in 1938 and is based in London, United Kingdom.
As of May 1, 2018, Clays Ltd. operates as a subsidiary of Elcograf S.p.A., a member of the Italian Gruppo Pozzoni and leader in the Italian Market for the production of monochrome and colour books, Catalogues and Magazines.
