At age 15, while still attending high school, he won a film award at the Venice Film Festival for his 8 mm film. He decided to become a filmmaker. At 18, Jakubowicz already graduated from Conservatoire Independent du Cinema Francais (CICF – a film school in Paris) with a M.A. degree in film editing. In 1968 at age 20 he left France and went to Israel for a one-month vacation. He ended up staying there for 15 years. This position allowed him to interact and work with major directors and foremost productions, including Andrei Konchalovsky’s Shy People, Tobbe Hopper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Invaders From Mars, and Barbet Schroedder’s Barfly. During those years he supervised all aspects of creative post-production on the entire Canon catalogue.
