General info :
Roger Thérond (born on October 24, 1924 in Sète, France - died on June 23, 2001 in Paris, France (aged 76), was a French journalist, convinced promoter of the power of photographic images, and director of Paris Match.

He was also part of the team that launched the magazine Photo.

Roger Thérond began his career with the title of correspondent in Paris for La Voix de la Patrie, a communist daily in Sète, while being a film critic for L'Écran Français in 1945, then a reporter for Samedi-Soir in 1948.

In 1949 spotted by Paul Gordeaux for his youth and enthusiasm, he entered Paris-Match in the team of Hervé Mille, Gaston Bonheur, Paul Gordeaux, Mania Croissard, Georges Pernoud, Raymond Castan, Jacques Audiberti, and Jacques Perret. In 1950, he became the editor in chief. In 1968, he participated in the creation of Ski Magazine.

He returned to Paris-Match in 1976 when he resumed with Filipacchi, as editorial director, a position he had already held and which he did not leave until 1999. Under his direction, Paris Match returned to success and sales rose again. In 1980, Matra, chaired by Jean-Luc Lagardère, took control of Hachette and Daniel Filipacchi's press group, giving birth to Matra Hachette (transformed into Hachette Filipacchi Médias in 1997). Thérond, the one who had been nicknamed "the Eye", retired at 74 years old. Alain Genestar succeeded him in July 1999.

He then joined Photo magazine which had just been created by Daniel Filipacchi on an idea by Walter Carone.

In 1980, he created, with Jean-Luc Monterosso, on the occasion of the 1st edition of the Mois de la Photo de Paris, the Grand Prix Paris Match du Photojournalisme, awarded every two years by the weekly Paris Match to a photojournalist working in the field of news reporting. He was also one of the oldest collectors of 19th century photographs.

In 1989, he participated in the creation of the first photojournalism festival, Visa pour l'Image, in Perpignan.

He left Paris Match in 1999.
He was an officer of the Order of Arts and Letters.

He had married the model Victoire, muse of Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent.

He is the father of Émilie Thérond, journalist and director (Mon maître d'école , released in 2016).
